Information for Doctors and Health Professionals
The Alexander Technique is primarily an educational technique based
on the work of F.M. Alexander (1869-1955). With its emphasis on
a psychophysical approach to the health and wellbeing of the individual,
the Alexander Technique can complement other health professions.
It provides a useful addition to, not replacement for medical supervision
and treatment. The technique involves re-education of neuro-muscular
and thinking processes, aiming to give the student a practical tool
for self help. It has important implications in the area of rehabilitation
and disease prevention, and is ultimately concerned with human potential
and improving quality of life.
The role of the teacher is not to diagnose or treat specific problems.
Rather the teacher works with how the student uses their body/ self
as a whole. With gentle, skilled hands on guidance and verbal instruction,
students are taught how to recognize and change habitual patterns
of tension which are interfering with wellbeing. The aim of lessons
is for the student to learn a practical technique which can be integrated
into daily activity. Students commonly report a greater sense of
ease and freedom in movement, and a developing experience of individual
unity and calm.

Garlick, sports medicine specialist and Alexander Technique
Teacher, gives further information. (Word
